“Help me Laura/help, help me Laura," Anthonie Tonnon croons at the climax of The Songs Of Your Youth, as a boys choir carols, piano chimes, and drums thunder; the Wilsonic homage both lyrical and musical. Like Father John Misty, Tonnon – Dunedin-raised, Auckland-based – employs pop-songwriter tropes with both sincerity and sarcasm, his wry character-sketches taking cues from Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman. On Successor, his debut solo LP, Tonnon shows an ear for melody and an eye for storytelling; the hard nouns of A Friend From Argentina and Mt. Cargill betraying the influence not of the Beach Boys, but literary Kmart realism.
